Welcome to Flightless Farms

Breeding Philosophy

We strive to combine the strengths of our sires and dams that emphasize a substantial, athletic physique, fiber fineness and luster, hefty birth weights and good milk production. We have been successful in producing a recognizable phenotype that can be picked out of a show line up.

Ballistics’ 2007 Get of Sire group of stretchy, black, fine fibered suri’s is a wonderful example of what we are able to produce utilizing a successful and focused breeding formula.

Phenotype that is predictable comes from the breeding lines that can be traced back to the large, substantive frames of the large domestic lanuda females. We have found those phenotypes in the domestic lines that trace back to The Canadian, Eskadra, Eskari, Crazy Mountain Man, Franklin, and The Condor. Combining these strong dam genotypes to the fine, lustrous fiber genetics of our herd sires has created a recognizable ‘stand out’ in today’s market.

It was fortunate and timely that Flightless Farms was given the opportunity to purchase some of the best dams in the country that otherwise would not have been in the marketplace. In 2005 we purchased females from the keeper herds of Co-Rect Llamas (Pierce) and Berry Acres (Goodyear), specifically to breed to Ballistic. Well known dams like Cachaca (ALSA Halter Champion), Esira (World Futurity Champion), Cacique who stands at 48 inches at the withers, and the wonderful Marie Antoinette who is still producing award winning cria at the age of 17.

GNLC Ballistic, a Peruvian/Domestic E-Line Suri was purchased in 2004. Ballistic took Flightless Farms to the next level. He has consistently passed on his ultra fine (17.7 AFD) black, wavy locks to both single coat and Suri offspring, while adding that beautiful E-Line neck and stretch.

In 2006 we added diverse, outcross suri genetics when we began purchasing Canadian llamas that have always been known for size and substance. We give credit to Fred and Sharon Isayew for taking suri llamas to that next level by consistently crossing back to large lanuda’s to attain the size we are striving to attain in our suri program. We now own some of the largest suri females in the country, due in part the White Star program. We have added the notable Herd Sires: WSL Ekati, a large Peruvian/Canadian suri; WSL Fireworks, a Peruvian/Canadian suri and clone to his sire, Vice; WSL Cuervo, a Peruvian/Canadian Double suri, and more recently, the well known HCLA Bolivian Easy Money, a Bolivian/Canadian suri from the Millers of Medicine River Suris.

Charlie and Karen Stephenson reside in Tulsa, Oklahoma with their three daughters, Anna, Corinne, Catherine and son, Chaz. The Stephenson family has been active in the llama community for over 12 years. Charlie and Karen find time in their busy schedule to attend and sponsor ALSA and Futurity venue shows throughout the country. Charlie also serves on the Board of Directors of the Suri Llama Association and is the Superintendent of the Tulsa State Fair Llama Show.

The breeding herd residing near their home in Tulsa numbers around 40 llamas, with an additional 70 breeding and show llamas residing in LaVeta, Colorado during the show season and summer months. The Colorado branch of Flightless Farms is managed by Alaine Byers-Holzhauer.

We hope to see all of our friends and colleagues at the upcoming llama events and would like to extend a personal invitation to you to attend the 20th Anniversary Party of Celebrity Sales in April 2008.  Flightless Farms will be sponsoring the Party that is sure to be the event of the year.
